GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman turned in first-place finishes in eight individual events and one relay at the 13th annual Furman Invitational Track Meet, held Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track Complex for Track and Field and Kelsey-West Track in Greenville, S.C. Macklin Caffe won the Blue Shoes Elite Mile event, recording a time of 4:03.37 to come in just shy of the sub-four minute mile mark.
Junior Erin Barker won the 800m (2:18.83) and the 1500m (4:41.71) with personal-best times to lead the Furman women's team. Junior Chloe Kowalski won the 5,000m with a time of 18:23.0, and sophomore Misha Holmes tallied a personal-best time of 15.14 to win the 100m hurdles event. The Paladin 4x400m relay team of junior Erin McChristian, senior Shannon Cantwell, senior Jenna Callahan, and Holmes posted a time of 4:08.60 for first place.
Sophomore Wilkerson Given placed first with personal-best times in both the 800m (1:55.39) and 1500m (3:53.61) to pace the Paladin men. Senior Charlie McGoogan turned in a first-place time of 15:13.52 in the 5,000m, and junior Brian Toney won the javelin with a throw of 47.50.
Several meet records were set at the event. Eric Chapman of USC Upstate set a new record with a throw of 165'1" in the hammer competition, and Ben Wheeler, also of USC Upstate, established a new meet record with a time of 14.61 in the 110m hurdles.
In the high school boys events, Carolina's Shacorey Jeter tied his own record of 10.99 in the 100m, and Adrian Caron of Walhalla set a new record at 50.25 in the 400m. Wade Hampton's 4x800m relay team established a meet record after recording a time of 8:14.41. In the field events, Broome's Jimel Feaster tied the meet record with a mark of 6'4". In the high school girl's events, Tiffany Siks of Easley set a new meet record with a distance of 40'1/2" in the shot put competition.
The Furman track and field teams will compete at the Southern Conference Championships April 22-23 in Birmingham, Ala.
