GREENVILLE, S.C. – The 39th annual Gene Mullin Furman Cross Country Invitational will be held Sat., Oct. 8, on the Furman University Golf Course. At the meet, the Paladins will honor members of the cross country and track and field teams from 1958-1965 as the school celebrates the 50th anniversary of its first SoCon Championship. Furman won the 1961 indoor track and field meet to secure the school's first league championship in any sport. Bagpiper Nate Williams will perform prior to each race.
The Saturday races will kick off with the Blue Shoes 5K at 7:45 a.m. The collegiate men's 8K will commence at 8:30 a.m., followed by the collegiate women's 5K at 9:10 a.m. At 9:40 a.m. the varsity girls' championship 5K will begin, followed by the varsity boys' championship 5K race at 10:15 a.m. The JV girls' 5K starts at 10:40 a.m., then the JV boys' 5K at 11:20 a.m. All races will be held on the cross country course of the Furman Golf Club, which has hosted two NCAA Division I Cross Country championships.
Furman welcomes 14 men's and women's college teams and 28 boys' and girls' high school teams to the event this year. Complete results will be available following the event at www.furmanpaladins.com, the official website for Furman University athletics.
The Paladin men's cross country team won last year's Furman Invitational with a score of 26 points, while the Furman women's team finished second to Georgia.
