Barker Earns All-SoCon First Team Honors To Lead Furman To Second-Place Finish At SoCon Championships

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Senior Erin Baker earned All-Southern Conference first team honors after placing fourth with a time of 17:05.80 on the 5K course to lead the Furman women's cross country team to a second-place finish at the 2011 Southern Conference Cross Country Championship Meet on Saturday morning in Charleston, S.C.  The finish marked the highest by the Paladins' women's team since 2003, when Furman also placed second at the league championship meet. 

UNC Greensboro won the women's meet with 35 points, followed by the Paladins with 80 points, and Elon with 111 points.  Senior Brooke Mosteller, who placed eighth with a time of 17:20.00, and rookie Sinead Haughey, who finished 15th with a time of 17:43.70, earned All-Southern Conference second team honors.  Paladin senior Chloe Kowalski also finished among the top-20, placing 19th with a time of 17:52.80, while sophomore Kacie Schoen rounded out the Furman scorers after placing 34th with a time of  18:20.20.

The Spartans also won the men's championship, scoring 26 points, while Davidson was second with 73 points, and Furman third with 82 points.  The third-place finish was the highest for the Paladins since 2008, when Furman also raked in third at the conference championship meet.

Freshman Tripp Hurt posted a time of 24:58.29 on the 8K course, followed by senior Chris Caldwell with a time of 24:54.47, to garner All-Southern Conference second team accolades.  Junior Wilkerson Given finished 17th with a time of 24:58.77, and senior Lee Gilmer placed 19th with a time of 25:06.24.  Sophomore Jack Klecker turned in a 21st-place finish with a time of 25:11.62 to complete the Paladin slate of scorers.

Haughey and Hurt represented the Paladins on the Southern Conference All-Freshman team.

Furman will compete at the Southeast Regional Championships November 12 in Louisville, Ky.
