Barker Leads Furman To 15th-Place Finish At NCAA Southeast Regional

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Senior Erin Baker placed 21st with a time of 20:59.6 on the 6K course to lead the Furman women's cross country team to a 15th-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Southeast Region Championships on Saturday morning in Louisville, Ky.  Virginia won the women's championship, followed by N.C. State, to qualify for the NCAA Championship meet.

Furman freshman Sinead Haughey placed 67th with a time of 21:53.9, while senior Brooke Mosteller took 89th place with a time of 22:12.3.  Fellow senior Chloe Kowalski turned in a time of 22:56.9 for 135th place, and sophomore Kacie Schoen placed 138th with a time of 22:58.8 to round out the Paladin slate of scorers.  Sophomore Catherine Burton finished 165th (23:17.6), and junior Emily Wirzba was 209th (24:21.8).  

The Paladin men had just three competitors at the meet, with senior Lee Gilmer pacing Furman with a time of 32:56.6 on the 10K course to finish 118th.  Senior Chris Caldwell placed 120th with a time of 32:59.7, and sophomore Tyler Greathouse snagged 170th place after recording a time of 34:27.5.  N.C. State won the men's meet, while Eastern Kentucky took second place at the championship.  Furman did not compete in the team championship. 

Furman will open the 2012 indoor track and field season January 13-14 when the Paladins compete at the Dick Taylor Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
