GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman track and field teams will open the 2011 indoor season this weekend at the Dick Taylor Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. at the Eddie Smith Field House. The meet begins on Friday with field events at 4:30 p.m. and running events at 5 p.m. and will conclude on Saturday, with field events beginning at 10 a.m. and running events commencing at noon.
Sophomores Julia Means and Catherine Burton return after representing the Paladin women's team on the 2011 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field All-Freshman team. Means placed 14th in the 3,000m with a time of 10:50.95, while Burton finished ninth in the mile after posting a time of 5:12.60 at the league meet. Furman finished eighth in the team scoring at the meet after junior Misha Holmes bested her own previous Furman record and placed fifth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.95, and senior Erin Barker took seventh place in the mile with a personal-best time of 5:09.82
The Furman men are led by senior Lee Gilmer, who placed third in both the 800m and mile events to lead the Paladins to a seventh-place finish at last year's conference meet. Gilmer posted a time of 1:55.29 in the 800m and a time of 4:12.87 in the mile. Sophomores Tyler Greathouse and James Perez, who were members of the 2011 SoCon All-Freshman Team in the 3,000m and 800m, respectively, also return for the Paladins.
