GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman Invitational Track and Field meet will be held Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track Complex for Track & Field and Kelsey-West Track. The meet will begin at 7 a.m. with a 5,000m race walk competition. High School events will begin at 8 a.m., with collegiate events commencing at 1 p.m.
For the sixth-straight year, the Blue Shoes elite men's mile will be held in conjunction with the Furman Invitational. In four out of the last five runnings of the event, the winner has achieved the coveted sub-four minute mile. In 2007, the first running of the event, American mile record holder Alan Webb became the first person to officially run a sub-four minute mile (3:57.83) in the state of South Carolina.
This year's field includes some post-collegiate runners, plus a few collegiate runners, including Furman's Lee Gilmer, Wilkerson Given, Tripp Hurt, and James Perez. Donnie Cowart, running for the elite team Ragged Mountain Racing, comes into the meet with the fastest time of the field this year, 3:58. Race time is set for noon on Saturday.
