GREENVILLE, S.C.-- The Furman men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the Southern Conference Championship Meet on Saturday at Lauren Hill Plantation in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. The meet will mark the 83rd Annual Southern Conference Cross Country Championship for the men and the 28th for the women. Admission is free to the public.
The championships will begin with the women's 5,000-meter run at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 8,000-meter event at 10:45 a.m. The top men's and women's teams will be honored as the 2012 Conference Champions, while the top seven individuals in each race will be named first team all-conference. Individual finishers placing 8th through 14th in each race will comprise the all-conference second team, and the top seven freshmen in each race will comprise the league's all-freshman team.
The Furman women's team finished second behind UNCG at last year's championships, scoring 80 points. Sophomore Sinead Haughey leads the Paladin returnees after placed 15th in the 5K race with a time of 17:43.70 to earn a spot on the All-Southern Conference second team and the league's all-freshman team in 2011.
The Paladin men's team finished third at the 2011 championships with a score of 82 points. Paladin sophomore Tripp Hurt led the team with a 12th-place finish (24:51.62) last season to represent Furman on the all-conference second team and the all-freshman team.
