Des Marais Takes Seventh In Shot Put To Lead Paladins In First Day Of SoCon Indoor T&F Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Senior Scott Des Marais placed seventh with a mark of 14.59m in the shot put to lead the Furman indoor track and field teams in the first day of competition at the Southern Conference Championship Meet, being held Saturday and Sunday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.

After the first day of competition, Samford leads the men's and women's team event, while Furman is in seventh place in the men's meet and 11th place in the women's competition. 

Senior Wilkerson Given finished ninth in the 3,000m with a time of 8:31.92, leading four Paladin runners in the event.  Junior Jack Klecker recorded a time of 8:46.37 for 18th-place, while rookie Bradley Gossett claimed 20th-place with a time of 8:58.60.  Fellow freshman Jack Miller placed 22nd with a time of 9:05.77.

Two Paladin runners advanced to Sunday's finals in their respective events, as freshman Cole Warren finished second in his heat with a time of 50.63 to advance in the 400m, and sophomore William Ivey took third in his heat after recording a time of 1:55.30 to secure a spot in Sunday's finals.

The Furman men's distance medley relay team of Given, Warren, Ivey, and junior James Perez placed fifth with a time of 10:13.09.

For the Paladin women's team, junior Catherine Burton finished 11th in the 3,000m with a time of 10:21.93, while junior Kacie Shoen placed 14th in the event after posting a time of 10:52.80.

 

The women's distance medley relay team of senior Emily Wirzba, junior Alexa Wilton, sophomore Emily Zizzi, and sophomore Sinead Haughey claimed seventh place with a time of 12:27.08

 

The final day of competition will begin Sunday morning at 9:15 a.m. with the men's heptathlon.
