GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's and women's cross country teams will open the 2013 season Friday at the Western Carolina Invitational in Cullowhee, N.C.  The meet will begin with a women's two-mile run at 6:30 p.m., followed by a men's 5K at 6:50 p.m.

The Paladin men's team, which was picked to lead the Southern Conference this season, returns six of the top seven runners from last season's team that finished fifth at the Southern Conference championships.  Junior Tripp Hurt finished seventh at the conference championships in 2012 and was selected to the all-conference team for the second-consecutive season.

The Furman women's team was slated to finish second in the league in 2013. The Paladins, who finished fourth at last year's championships, return five of their top seven competitors from last year, including junior Sinead Haughey, who led all runners with a ninth-place finish at the 2012 SoCon meet.
