GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's and women's cross country teams will open the 2014 season Saturday at the Clemson Cross Country Invitational at Musser Farms in Seneca, S.C. The meet will begin with a women's three-mile run at 10 a.m., followed by a men's four-mile race at 10:45 a.m.
The Paladin men's team, which is picked to lead the Southern Conference this season, returns six of the top seven runners from last year's team. Senior Tripp Hurt finished fourth at the conference championships in 2013 and was selected to the all-conference team for the second-consecutive season.
The Furman women's team is also picked as the league leader this year. The Paladins return their top six competitors from last season, including sophomore Allie Buchalski, the 2013 SoCon Women's Cross Country Freshman of the Year, who led all Furman runners with a second-place finish at the 2013 SoCon meet.
"We recently finished our preseason camp, and it was a wonderful experience," said Furman head cross country coach Robert Gary, the 2013 SoCon Coach of the Year. "With the vast majority of our team comprised of freshmen and sophomores, the camp served not just as a great training experience, but also as an excellent team bonding experience. Not everyone will be racing on Saturday, but I am looking forward to a nice effort as we start the season. Our goal is always to enter the SoCon and NCAA Championship season strong."
