GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The 24th-ranked Furman men's cross country team will split the squad and compete at both the Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis., and the Wake Forest Invitational in Kernersville, N.C., on Friday, while the Paladin women's team will run at the Pre-NCAA Invitational in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday.
"Both programs are very excited about such competitive races," said Furman head coach Robert Gary. "We will be racing the top teams in the country and are excited to see how we stack up. The women's program still isn't quite full strength, but it's moving in the right direction, just in time for the SoCon and NCAA Championships."
The men's 8K at the Wisconsin Invitational is set for Friday at 11:45 a.m. at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. The championship race features 17 ranked teams, including seven top-11 teams. Furman will face Arizona State, Boise State, BYU, Columbia, Dartmouth, Eastern Kentucky, Florida State, Harvard, Illinois, Indiana, Iona, Iowa State, Lamar, Michigan, Michigan State, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Northern Arizona, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Penn State, Portland, Princeton, Providence, South Dakota State, Stanford, Syracuse, Tulsa, UCLA, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and William & Mary.
The Wake Forest Invitational will feature a men's 8K at 4:30 p.m. at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex. The Paladins will square off against Appalachian State, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Davidson, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Elon, George Mason, High Point, North Carolina Central, North Carolina State, Richmond, Shaw, UNC Asheville, UNC Charlotte, UNC Wilmington, USC Upstate, VMI, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Western Carolina, Wingate, and Winston-Salem State.
The Paladin women will compete at the Pre-Nationals Invitational at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park, the site of the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championships. The meet, which features numerous powerhouses that finished among the elite at the 2014 NCAA Championships, will serve as a pre-cursor for this year's national championships. The meet will be split into two races, the Women's Black and Women's Red divisions. Furman will compete in the Women's Black 6K race beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Besides Furman, teams competing in the Women's Black race include: UMass Lowell, UC Davis, UMKC, Miami (Ohio), Tulane, UNCG, Ohio, Western Michigan, Tennessee, Arizona, Murray State, Western Kentucky, Morehead State, Louisville, Indiana, San Francisco, UNC Asheville, Central Michigan, Xavier, UC Santa Barbara, Akron, Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Indiana State, Buffalo, Houston, Southern Utah, UTEP, Washington State, Ball State, TCU, Liberty, Arkansas State, Northwestern, Kansas, South Carolina, Coastal Carolina, and Elon.
