SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Furman cross country teams won the Eye Opener Invitational Friday at the Milliken Research Center in Spartanburg, S.C., to open the 2016 season.  The Paladin men scored 15 points for the victory, while the Paladin women tallied 16 points in the win.

Furman runners took the top seven spots in the men's 8K race.  Junior Frank Lara won individual honors, placing first with a time of 25:16.88, while junior Josh Brickell finished second at 25:24.40.  Senior Matt Lange and redshirt freshman Ryan Adams were third and fourth, respectively, at 25:25.65 and 25:34.90, while freshman Mason Coppi took fifth with a time of 25:34.98.  Freshmen Jake Ogden and Thomas Moore captured sixth and seventh place, with Odgen posting a time of 26:01.90 and Moore clocking in at 26:11.51.

The Paladin women placed all seven scoring runners, including six freshmen, among the top 10, as rookie Savannah Carnahan won the individual title with a time of 17:25.95 on the 5K course, followed by senior Laura Miller in second with a time of 17:53.29.  Freshman Emma Grace Hurley posted a time of 17:57.53 to take fourth, and rookie Riley Burr was fourth after crossing the line in 17:59.97.  Freshman Gabrielle Jennings placed sixth (18:23.21), and rookie Jennifer Stephenson (18.38.81) recorded an eighth-place finish.  Freshman Grace Dwyer rounded out the Paladin scorers in 10th place at 18:46.11.

"Both program really did a nice job, especially considering our last minute scramble to find a meet after the Charlotte meet was cancelled this afternoon," said Furman head coach Robert Gary.  "The women's team really ran well tonight.  Savannah looked extremely strong, and Riley had probably the best cross country race of her life.  Several of the men ran their first 8k race ever.  Frank and Josh looked very controlled. We will really turn people loose next week at our home meet."

The Paladins will compete at the Furman University Cross Country Classic on September 10.
