GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman's Allie Buchalski placed seventh in the 5,000m at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships Sunday at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Running in her first professional race as a member of the Seattle-based Brooks Beasts Track Club, Buchalski posted a time of 15:40.62 versus the top professional and collegiate runners in the nation. Shelby Houlihan of the Nike/Bowerman Track Club won the championship with a time of 15:31.03, followed by Under Armour's Rachel Schneider at 15:32.71.
"Two years ago we walked away from the NCAA Championship race knowing Allie had to find the last 800m if she wanted to contend for a title, and she found 799," said Furman assistant coach Rita Gary at the conclusion of the race. "Her performance today was very reminiscent of that same scenario. She's 800m short of being in contention. I'm excited she will have the opportunity with Brooks to find the full 800m this time around."
Buchalski concluded her collegiate career as the most decorated athlete in Furman track and field history. A seven-time All-American, she was in the NCAA runner up in the 5,000m two weeks ago at the NCAA Championships. A three-time SoCon Cross Country Runner of the Year and individual champion who paced the Paladins to four SoCon cross country titles, she holds Furman program records in the 3,000m and 5,000m indoors and in the 1,500m, 5,000m, and 4x800m relay outdoors. A CoSIDA Academic All-American and SoCon Academic Honor Roll selection, she is a member of the Division I All-Academic Track & Field Team.
Off the track, Buchalski was active in both community and campus organizations during her career at Furman, serving as a volunteer at the Greenville Children's Hospital and as a summer youth minister at Redeemer Lutheran Church. A member of the ODK Honor Society, she is a past recipient of Furman's C. Dan Joyner Leadership Award and has also served as her team's SAAC representative and as a member of the 2015 FOCUS program through the Cothran Center.
