GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman's baseball squad opens its final week of the 2017 regular season with a Tuesday clash against Georgia. First pitch for the SEC Network televised game set for 6:00 p.m. at Foley Field.
The Paladins (27-24) conclude the regular season with a three-game series at Belmont, beginning on Thursday, before returning home to open Southern Conference Tournament play next week, with the foe and date to be determined.
Furman's series win over VMI over the weekend improved the Paladins to 14-10 in SoCon play and wrapped up a 13-2 stretch the followed a dismal 1-8 start in league action. Furman has won 16 of its last 20 games.
Georgia (22-30) is coming off impressive back-to-back, three-game series wins over sixth-ranked Mississippi State in Athens and fourth-ranked Kentucky in Lexington two weeks ago.
Freshman right-hander Austin Wood (0-0, 12.60 ERA) will be making his collegiate starting debut for the Paladins on Tuesday while Georgia will counter with sophomore right-hander Blakely Brown (0-2, 7.15 ERA).
The game will mark the eighth meeting between the Paladins and Bulldogs since 2010, with Furman holding a 4-3 advantage in the last seven contests. Georgia claimed the last matchup, a 5-3 win in Athens in 2015.
Furman's strong late season run has been fueled by solid hitting, which has seen the Paladins swat .346 and crack 37 home runs over the last 20 games. In addition, first-year head coach Brett Harker's club has scored 8.3 runs/game, posted an earned run average of 3.81, and fielded at a .987 clip with just 10 errors over that span.
Junior outfielder Landon Kay (.347, 10 HR, 33 RBI) leads the Paladin attack that also includes junior first baseman Brandon Elmy (.343, 11 HR, 46 RBI) and senior outfielder Carter Grote (.343, 7 HR, 49 RBI).
The offensive rebound of sophomore third baseman Jake Crawford (.303, 2 HR, 27 RBI), who has hit .400 (26x65) over his last 17 starts, and senior catcher Cameron Whitehead (.290, 10 HR, 29 RBI), who has swatted .381 with 20 RBI in his last 20 games, has been a big part of Furman's surge.
