Late Run Helps Georgia Hold Off Furman, 84-78

Greenville, S.C. -- J.J. Frazier tallied 28 points and forward Yante Maten added 27 to help Georgia edge Furman, 84-78, in non-conference men's basketball action in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic on Thursday evening at Stegeman Coliseum.

The loss dropped the Paladins to 1-2, while Georgia improved to 2-1 on the season.

After Kris Acox's jumper in the lane gave Furman a 58-57 lead with 7:13 remaining, Georgia's Mike Edwards ignited a 12-2 Bulldogs run with a dunk on the other end. Maten hit 4-of-6 free throws during the stretch and Frazier drained two free throws with 3:20 left to extend the margin to 69-60.

Back-to-back baskets from Daniel Fowler trimmed the UGA lead to 73-67 with 1:34 to go, but Furman was unable to get any closer as the Bulldogs connected on 9-of-10 free throws in the final 1:30.

Georgia shot 56% in the second half to finish at 52.8% for the game. The Bulldogs converted on 23-of-29 free throw attempts and used a 32-23 edge on the glass to outscore the Paladins in the paint and in second chance points.

Frazier hit 4-of-9 three-point attempts and 10-of-11 free throws to lead all scorers, while Maten converted on 9-of-13 field goals and 8-of-12 trips to the foul line.

Kris Acox paced Furman with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and Fowler contributed 16 points and five assists. Devin Sibley and Andrew Brown rounded out the Paladins double figure scorers with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Georgia held a 36-31 halftime lead and extended its advantage to 44-34 before the Paladins used a 14-3 run to grab the lead. Brown netted five straight points and freshman Jordan Lyons capped the spurt with a trey to give Furman a 48-47 lead with under 12:30 to play.

Georgia used a run of its own to open up a 56-49 lead, but Brown hit another three to help key a 7-0 Furman spurt to regain the lead with 8:07 to play.

Furman is set to host the Trinity Baptist Eagles in the home opener at Timmons Arena on Saturday at 4 p.m. Saturday's home opener has been tabbed "Take A Kid To The Game Day" and Freshmen Appreciation Day" at Timmons Arena. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3 with Scott Cole and Jim Davis calling the action. There will be no radio broadcast of Saturday's game.
