Paladins Power Past UNC Asheville To Remain Unbeaten, 65-51

Asheville, N.C. -- Matt Rafferty posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds and Jordan Lyons poured in 18 points to power Furman to a 65-51 victory over UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon at Kimmel Arena in Asheville, N.C.

The victory gave Furman, winners of 14 of its last 15 games dating back to last season, its first 7-0 start in school history, while UNC Asheville dropped to 1-5.

Rafferty, 9-of-14 from the floor and 2-of-3 at the foul line, netted 13 of his 20 points in the first half to help Furman to a 38-22 halftime lead. Leading 22-18 with under eight minutes to play in the first half, Rafferty scored four straight points to ignite a 16-4 Paladin run to end the half.

The Bulldogs buried back-to-back triples to open the second half before Lyons drained a trey to start a 12-2 Furman spurt that upped the Paladins' advantage to 50-30 on Tre Clark's basket with 13:31 to play.

Lyons connected on 7-of-15 shots, including 4-of-10 beyond the arc, to score 18 points, while Clark added nine points. The Paladins shot 48.2% from the field and outscored the Bulldogs 40-22 in the paint. Furman forced 18 turnovers to fashion a 21-11 edge in points off of turnovers.

Tajion Jones scored 14 points to lead the Bulldogs, who shot 43.8% on the night, and Cress Worthy added 10 points and six rebounds.
