Furman's Mitric Honored As SoCon Freshman Of The Year; Three Paladins Earn SoCon Postseason Honors

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman's Ivan Mitric was honored as the Southern Conference Men's Tennis Freshman of the Year, while Cameron Green and Jake Munns earned all-conference first team citations, as announced today by the league office.  Postseason balloting was conducted by the league's head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.

Mitric, a native of Toronto, Ontario, posted a 14-8 overall singles record and a 5-2 mark against SoCon foes, playing primarily at flight three, to become the fifth Paladin to win the rookie of the year award.  In doubles play, he was 12-10 overall and 4-3 in the league.  He was also named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman team.

"We are very proud that Ivan was chosen for freshman of the year over many excellent candidates in this category," said Furman head coach Kelly Jones.  "Ivan is very dedicated to his tennis and academics.  We are looking forward to the next three years, as he continues to improve his tennis and embraces the culture at Furman."

Green, a senior from Sydney, Australia, was selected to the All-SoCon first team for singles, claiming his fourth-straight all-conference honor.  Green played at flight one for the Paladins, tallying a 14-7 overall record and 6-1 league mark.  Green and Munns, a junior from Cheshunt, Herfordshire, United Kingdom, garnered first-team accolades for doubles.  The Paladin duo posted an overall record of 9-3 and a 5-1 conference mark in the top doubles position.

"Cameron has been a team leader for four years and has had his best season this year," said Jones.  "This award is well deserved for being a model student-athlete, leader, and the hardest worker on the team.  Congratulations to Jake and Cameron for an exceptional year together as our #1 doubles team.  They have been the rock and energy for our doubles all season.  We are very proud of both guys!"

The 2018 Southern Conference Men's Tennis Championship begins Friday in Chattanooga, Tenn.  The Paladins enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 6 Wofford Friday at 10:30 a.m.
