Athletic Director's Corner

July 2018

Paladin Faithful,

I hope your summer has been as enjoyable as the one I have enjoyed at 3300 Poinsett Highway!

Thanks to an extraordinary group of committed students, coaches and staff, your Furman Paladins had the greatest cumulative sports year in history (at least since 1993 when the Director’s Cup was started).

The Dins finished in 73rd place (previous best was 86th) with a record 307.5 points (previous high was 209 in 2016-17).  We had two teams finish in the top 11 in the country (W. Cross Country and W. Golf) and senior Allie Buchalski narrowly missed becoming a NCAA Champion in the 5000 meters by finishing second.  Overall, 6 of our teams won SoCon Championships in 17-18.

We took a little time to celebrate the achievements of our student-athletes, but are still building for the future and looking for ways to improve our competitive standing.  Before we know it, the fall season will be upon us, and we are excited to see what the new year will bring.  We have welcomed several of our freshmen student-athletes to campus already for summer school and they appear prepared to raise the bar as students, community members and athletes!

We have also been busy finding ways to better support our fans and students with several new projects.  Alley Gym received a facelift with a new entrance that will provide a ticket window, concession area and two new restrooms.  The volleyball team also will be competing on a brand new competition floor in 2018-19 thanks to a generous donation from the Marcus Foundation.  Also new for 2018-19 will be a Track facility that will provide shelter and meeting space for our nationally ranked Track and Cross Country programs. The new “track shack” is adjacent to the track and was made possible by the generosity of Furman Track alum, Chris Borch ’78.  Timmons Arena has also been a focus of our renovation efforts as we want to elevate the fan experience to a level that matches the effort of our Men and Women’s programs which continue to rise.  Be on the lookout for some exciting news in the near future for Furman Basketball.

Finally, I want to send a sincere THANK YOU to our Paladin Club members who ALSO rose to the occasion and set a new fundraising record in 2017-18.  We exceeded last years’ all-time high by raising $1.366 million for scholarships.  As we continue to compete at a high level, your support is needed more than ever, and is also appreciated more than ever!  Thank you for all that you do to allow our kids perform like champions and thrive on the most beautiful campus in the country.  As The Furman Advantage evolves, we will need all of you to find ways to mentor, guide and connect with our students both in Greenville and around the country, learn more here:

It is truly a great time to be a Paladin!
