GREENVILLE, S.C. -- A total of 208 Furman student-athletes have been named to the 2018-19 Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll, which the league released today.
Furman's 208 selections represent the 20 intercollegiate sports offered by the university and approximately 49 percent of all team participants.
The academic honor roll originated in 1988-89, when SoCon athletic directors established the award as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports at member institutions and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher, were eligible the entire academic year, and were members of the final squad lists.
Seven Paladins garnered perfect 4.0 grade point averages for the 2018-19 school year: Andrew Sisson (football/health sciences), David Carter (men's soccer/undeclared), Drew Singerman (men's tennis/health sciences), Carris Campbell (volleyball/classics), Isabella Gutierrez (women's soccer/health sciences), Danni Vines (women's tennis/health sciences), and Georgie Walker (women's tennis/French).
Forty four Paladins garnered SoCon Commissioner's Medals, which were accorded student-athletes sporting GPAs of 3.8 or better. This standard was raised from 3.5 beginning in 2015-16.
