Greenville, S.C. – Walker Zimmerman, a defensive stalwart for LAFC and former center back for the Furman Paladins, was selected to the 2019 MLS All-Star Game as part of the "MLS Fan XI", it was announced this week.
The Lawrenceville, Ga., native was selected by fans to make his first all-star game appearance alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic (LA Galaxy), Wayne Rooney (D.C. United), Carlos Vela (LAFC), Ezequiel Barco (Atlanta United), Jonathan Dos Santos (LA Galaxy), Pity Martinez (Atlanta United), Nani (Orlando City SC), Leandro Gonzalez Pirez (Atlanta United), Graham Zusi (Sporting KC) and Brad Guzan (Atlanta United). The MLS Fan XI will join two commissioner's picks and 11 selections made by the all-star head coach to comprise the 24-man roster that will face Atletico Madrid on July 31, at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Fla., in the 2019 MLS All-Star Game.
Zimmerman, 26, has started in 15 matches while helping LAFC to the top of the Western Conference standings with an 11-1-4 record. He started in 26 matches and netted four goals a year ago to help LAFC set a league record for points by an expansion club.
The defender will be back in action tonight as he leads the United States Men's National Team versus Trinidad & Tobago in the squad's second match of group play in the 2019 Gold Cup. He earned a start at center back in Tuesday's tournament-opening triumph over Guyana. Tonight's match will be televised live on FS1 at 8 p.m.
Zimmerman earned United Soccer Coaches All-American honors as a Paladin in 2011 and 2012 before being selected seventh overall by FC Dallas in the 2013 MLS Super Draft. He played five seasons with FC Dallas before joining LAFC via trade prior to the 2018 season.
