Greenville, S.C. -- Canisius' Erika Mackie tossed a 3-0 shutout against Furman before Dayton's Manda Cash pitched the Flyers to a 2-0 shutout of the Paladins on the opening day of the Upstate Classic on Friday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.

After Canisius cruised to a 12-4 victory over Dayton in the opening game of the day behind a double, homer and six RBIs from Lauren Castro, Mackie (3-3) limited the Paladins to six hits in a game two shutout.

Mackie and Furman's Emily Demonte traded punches in a pitcher's duel as the game went to extra innings at 0-0. Morgan Altman reached on an error to start the top of the eighth. Samantha Sharkey followed with a bunt and reached safely to put runners at first and second when Altman beat Kalie Hicks' throw to second base. Demonte fanned the next batter before Castro was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Moriah Harris' put Canisius in front with a two-run double to right and Lindsey Silfer added a sacrifice fly to up the margin to 3-0.

Caroline Cash and Lindsey Bert reached base on singles in the bottom of the eighth, but Mackie worked out of trouble to end the threat. Mackie surrendered just six hits in eight innings, while striking out nine batters and walking two to improve to 3-3.

Demonte (2-5) allowed one earned run on six hits over eight innings. She did not issue a walk while fanning eight batters.

Courtney Jacobs went 1-for-3 with a single, walk and two stolen bases to lead the Paladin offense.

Canisius' three eighth-inning runs ended a streak of 21 shutout innings in a row by the Furman pitching staff.

Manda Cash (5-2) struck out eight batters and tossed a five-hit shutout to continue Furman's offensive woes in game two.

Dayton got all the offense it would need in the top of the first inning as Lisa Tassi drew a two-out walk and scored the go-ahead run on Katie Ryan's double into the gap. Kailee Budicin followed with a single to plate Ryan and stake the Flyers to a 2-0 advantage.

Furman loaded the bases on a walk, single and Flyer error with no outs in the bottom of the frame, but Cash struckout out Hannah Reynolds, got a force out at the plate and got Taylor Vahle looking to end the threat. The Paladins, who left nine runners on base, stranded at least one in every inning except one in the loss.

Bert (5-5) took the loss after allowing two runs on eight hits over seven innings. She allowed one walk and struck out seven Flyers.

Caroline Cash collected two hits for Furman, while Jacobs added a hit and base on balls.

The Paladins return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday versus Youngstown State before facing Radford at 3 p.m.
